Cadi traveled to Austin this week to compete in state Student Congress (congressional debate). She qualified for the finals which are held in the State Capitol Building, which is a very unique experience. This is the only academic contest that occurs in the capitol building.
Presiding Officers (similar to Speaker of the House) are elected by other competitors after tryouts for the position. Then one of those wins Outstanding Presiding Officer, this year Cadi Powers!
Additionally, as a part of the whole group of competitors Cadi was awarded State Runner up. Cadi tied the state champion in points but the tiebreaker (determined by the parliamentarian in the room) gave the nod to another. Winning Outstanding Presiding Officer and medaling is very difficult but almost be state champ not just a medalist is exceptional.
Pictures are Cadi with her Golden Gavel (Outstanding Presiding Officer) and Silver Medal, the other is the swearing in ceremony on Day 1 before prelims.
